In 1986, the FDA issued a regulation (CFR title 21 part 179) that permits irradiation of fruits at a maximum dose up to 1 kGy for certain benefits such as insect disinfestation and ripening, growth and maturation inhibition. Not only specific applications to foods are specified in this regulation but also type and sources of radiation: gamma rays from cobalt-60 or cesium-137, accelerated electrons from a machine source not to exceed 10 MeV or x rays from a machine source not to exceed 5 MeV.
