London Made Us : A Memoir of a Shape Shifting City – Book
We’re told Crossrail is necessary to keep London moving, though turning Reading into a western suburb of the city and pouring millions more people into the center of town every day will have consequences.
It has already taken away another little slice of what we thought of as our own, turning an intimate if occasionally intimidating enclave into a tacky no-mans-land of wheelie suitcases and bemused out-of-towners.
Demolishing one of the remaining slivers of the old, storied West End and replacing it with a shiny reception center, with glass pyramids and high definition touchscreen ‘entertainment portals’, feels like a slight to the past, a disservice to history.
