It was December 21, 1994, and in four days we would be celebrating Christmas in a poverty-stricken country. We had traveled for nearly a week only to face an overwhelming reality. As usual, though, my mother insisted on seeing the glass as half full.
She found potatoes and eggs in the pantry and cooked dinner, telling us that everything was going to be fine, that we would be able to study, go to college, escape from the burden of our last name. We could learn English in South Africa or bring South African professors here to teach us.
Our luggage had gotten delayed, so Andrea and I went to a small shopping center. But there were only empty stores, except for one souvenir shop with low quality T-shirts that said “Maputo”—and cost a hundred dollars each!
