Nitrogen is a key element of proteins which include the thousands of enzymes that facilitate life. Proteins are also key structural components in plant tissue. It is a major component of chlorophyll, and under deficiency conditions, chlorophyll production is reduced and leaves take on a chlorotic, yellow color.
Nitrogen is a mobile element, meaning that once incorporated into plant tissues it can be remobilized if necessary and move to actively growing tissue. Since it is mobile, older leaves first show signs of nitrogen deficiency. Nitrogen is part of the ATP molecule, important in the metabolic energy balance of plants, and is also a part of nucleic acids, the genetic code for life.
