There is a lot to consider before going ahead and creating custom tables in the WordPress database. Using this method means you lose a lot of the functionality of WordPress entirely; the CMS and a lot of its plugins aren’t expecting your tables to be there, so you’ll lose all their functionality. The adding, removing, querying, and updating database functions will need to be performed by the plugin, taking into account the need for all this to be done securely and efficiently as well.

However, there are some cases that better suit a custom table in the database: when the data structure you want to create doesn’t fit into the schema of the WordPress tables or when there’s a need for more complex queries that the WordPress database does not lend itself to. Or possibly in when adding more content to the posts table by creating new post types would bloat it so much that it would essentially cause major performance issues for the entire site.
